{"id":36191,"date":"2016-06-11T08:00:37","date_gmt":"2016-06-11T15:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webdesignledger.com\/?p=36191"},"modified":"2016-06-17T05:17:07","modified_gmt":"2016-06-17T12:17:07","slug":"design-make-technology-human","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webdesignledger.com\/design-make-technology-human\/","title":{"rendered":"Design to Make Technology Human"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The design of a man-made object is only complete when people use it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"7f80\" class=\"graf--h4 graf--leading\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">What happened?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"78e6\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Babbage\" rel=\"nofollow\">Charles Babbage<\/a> designed the first computer between 1833 and 1871. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OYecfV3ubP8\" rel=\"nofollow\">Then came 1984<\/a>. The Apple Macintosh computer was invented: the birth of a mass-market PC with a graphical user interface and mouse. A completely new operating system was created to navigate information within this graphical interface.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8bf7\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Since then, screens have continued to shrink. We\u2019ve moved from desktop, to laptop, to smartphone, to iWatch, to GoogleGlass, to\u200a\u2014\u200awell \u2014anything: <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/web\/solutions\/trends\/iot\/overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">the internet of things<\/a>. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/Article\/Smartphone-Users-Worldwide-Will-Total-175-Billion-2014\/1010536\" rel=\"nofollow\">The amount of smartphone users reaches 1.75 Billion by 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d1be\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">We\u2019re addicted to our screens.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9ea3\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p graf--last\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">But while creating and consuming information in 2D, we forgot about space.<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">We forgot that information exists across systems, not just within them. Visually, we\u2019re looking to natural surfaces and elements, which further communicate and respond to our human nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"e051\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q8TXgCzxEnw\" rel=\"nofollow\">Material Design by Google Developers<\/a> is trying to give people access to meaningful content using human behavior and \u201c<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/design\/spec\/material-design\/introduction.html#introduction-goals\" rel=\"nofollow\">develop a single underlying system that allows for a unified experience across platforms and device sizes.<\/a>\u201d It sounds like a step in the right direction and is fun, neat, and colorful.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9a7c\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p graf--last\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">When we can design across systems, devices will evolve or disappear. <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">We will not stop consuming content, rather consume it in a way that suits human behaviour, not the other way around.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"78ca\" class=\"graf--h4 graf--leading\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--h4-quote is-other\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Delivering content that sounds human<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p id=\"62d9\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">Future interfaces deliver content in more meaningful, relevant ways.<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">Content can stimulate all of our senses and be delivered at contextually relevant times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"041a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/fluid.media.mit.edu\/projects\/fingerreader\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fluid Interfaces<\/a> is part of MIT Media Lab and is designing interfaces, which allow content to flow across systems. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/86912300\" rel=\"nofollow\">FingerReader<\/a> is a wearable device that assists in reading printed text by receiving audio feedback of the words and haptic feedback of the text layout. Blind people can now read with their finger, an example of the human body as an interface, assisted by technology.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c069\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-future-of-audio\/audio-is-expanding-the-internet-747e70fbccdb\">Audio is expanding not only the internet,<\/a> but also our relationship with the content itself. Audio is an exciting medium to deliver content because unlike visual information, it doesn\u2019t take up space.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a0fe\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">As depicted in <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1798709\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Her<\/a>, we can experience an emotional connection with audio content, because sounds human; and characters and personalities mean that the content is\u200a\u2014\u200ain a sense human. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CapsuleFM\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Early Edition by Capsule.fm<\/a> gives content personality using artificial hosts, Miranda and Carl, who read news headlines, weather, entertainment and jokes in between your music. <span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">The most sharable and engaging content is actually not necessarily informative content such as news, rather the engaging and personalised audio confessions, artificial jokes and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/capsulefm\/mirandasays-from-the-early-edition-by-capsulefm\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">flattery<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"cdff\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p graf--last\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.de\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCIQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fguyhoffman.com%2F&amp;ei=HhK8U9uYCtKA7Qaus4GoAQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNG_UcqJyxmgaTn77kRRk700IIYwLA&amp;sig2=xKOlLOM7Hw55j6rDoQJ9qw&amp;bvm=bv.70138588,d.ZGU\" rel=\"nofollow\">Guy Hoffman<\/a> proves the power of connecting audio with body language. His projects in human-robot interaction combine audio output with posture, which connect with humans on a natural level. Here, we should again seek inspiration from human senses, using them compliment the driving experience\u200a\u2014\u200aor rather\u200a\u2014\u200afree us to concentrate on driving. Using\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fujitsu-ten.com\/business\/technicaljournal\/pdf\/12-2E.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">voice recognition technology<\/a> and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seeingmachines.com\/product\/facelab\/in-vehicle-eyetracking\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">eye tracking<\/a> technology, as well as new touch interfaces such as <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/matthaeuskrenn.com\/new-car-ui\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthaeus Krenn\u2019s proposal for an in-car UI<\/a>, we can build an intuitive environment, which works together with our own behavior.<\/p>\n<p id=\"98f7\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p graf--last\">Touch is increasingly exciting in interaction design and the future interface, where <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haptic_technology\" rel=\"nofollow\">haptic technology<\/a> provides a more sensitive and responsive experience with our environments.
